How Many AI Images Have Been Created? The Numbers
Over 30 billion AI images have been created since mid-2022, with ~80 million generated daily in 2026 (up from 34M/day in 2024). Adobe Firefly alone passed 24B assets; the Stable Diffusion ecosystem ~12.59B (2023 baseline).
More than 30 billion AI images have been created since consumer generators launched in mid-2022 - roughly equivalent to all photographs taken in the first 150 years of photography. Daily volume grew from ~2 million images after DALL·E 2’s 2022 launch to roughly 80 million per day in 2026, with single events like the GPT-4o Ghibli wave briefly pushing volume to ~100 million per day.
Key statistics
More than 30 billion AI images have been created since mid-2022, per Everypixel Journal’s aggregated methodology.
Approximately 80 million AI images are generated daily in 2026 across proprietary, open-source, embedded, and self-hosted platforms.
Firefly crossed 24 billion cumulative generated assets by mid-2025 - 1 billion of them in its first three months.
AI images were ~0.6% of all images created daily in 2024 (34M AI vs ~5.3B conventional photos) - a small but rapidly growing share.
The 34M/day 2024 baseline equals roughly 393 images per second; 2026 volume implies over 900 per second.
AI image volume year by year, 2022 to 2026
Daily volume has roughly doubled every year since DALL·E 2 launched. The cumulative count passed 15 billion by August 2023 and exceeds 30 billion by 2026, with single launch events (GPT-4o, Nano Banana Pro) now adding a billion images in weeks.
| Year | Daily volume | Annual output (approx.) | Main drivers |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 | ~2M/day | ~730M | DALL·E 2 public launch, Stable Diffusion v1, Midjourney |
| 2023 | ~15M/day | ~5.5B | Midjourney v5, SDXL, Adobe Firefly launch |
| 2024 | ~34M/day | ~12.4B | Stable Diffusion pipelines, DALL·E 3 in ChatGPT |
| 2025 | ~50M/day (avg) | ~18B | GPT-4o launch (700M in week one), Nano Banana |
| 2026 | ~80M/day | on pace for ~29B | Nano Banana Pro (1B in 53 days), embedded generation |
Volume timeline built on Everypixel Journal’s counting methodology, extended with platform disclosures (OpenAI, Adobe, Google) for 2025–2026. Annual figures are daily-rate integrals, not platform-reported totals.
How has AI image volume grown year by year?
Daily volume roughly doubled every year: 2M/day (2022), 13–15M (2023), 34M (2024), ~50M (2025), ~80M (2026) - with launch spikes far above trend.
DALL·E 2’s public launch established the first baseline: ~2 million images/day, ~730 million for the year.
Midjourney v5, SDXL, and Firefly launches drove ~15M images/day and ~5.5B for the year; cumulative total passed 15B by August 2023.
Aggregated platform disclosures put 2024 volume at ~34M/day (~12.4B for the year), with Stable Diffusion pipelines the largest contributor.
GPT-4o’s viral launch week (700M images, 130M users) briefly tripled global daily volume.
Google’s Nano Banana Pro added 1 billion images in its first 53 days inside the Gemini app.
How we compiled this data
We use Everypixel Journal’s 2023 study as the methodological anchor (the only rigorous cross-platform count published) and extend it with dated platform disclosures: OpenAI’s 700M launch-week figure, Adobe’s Firefly milestones, and Google’s Nano Banana Pro count. The "30B+ total" headline is a floor, computed by summing platform-reported cumulative counts and deduplicating overlapping categories conservatively. Last full review: June 12, 2026.
Before you cite these numbers
- No one can count self-hosted generation. Local Stable Diffusion and FLUX installs have no telemetry, so every total here is a documented floor, not a census.
- Platform counts overlap and define "image" differently: Adobe counts every Generative Fill stroke as an asset, OpenAI counts user generations. Do not sum platform totals naively.
- The 30B+ cumulative figure cannot be precisely reconciled with the year-by-year daily rates because counting methodologies changed between 2023 and 2026.
- The 0.6% share-of-all-images stat is from 2024; with conventional photography roughly flat and AI volume doubling, the 2026 share is likely 1.5–2%.
Frequently asked questions
How many AI images are created per day?
Approximately 80 million per day in 2026, according to Everypixel Journal methodology - up from 34 million/day in 2024 and 15 million in 2023.
How many AI images exist in total?
Over 30 billion since mid-2022. Adobe Firefly alone accounts for 24+ billion assets, and the Stable Diffusion ecosystem for ~12.59 billion (2023 baseline, far higher now). Totals overlap because platforms count differently.
What percentage of images online are AI-generated?
AI images were roughly 0.6% of all images created daily in 2024, but the share is growing fast - and in stock photography specifically, roughly 23% of new content is now AI-generated per Getty/Shutterstock data.
