Short answer: If you don't want a monthly plan, use a pay-per-image platform (fal, Replicate or the OpenAI API) or a one-time credit pack (Morphed from $6 for 300 credits, or Krea compute packs). If you want a plan under $20 a month, the entry tiers are Morphed Basic and Krea Basic at $9, Midjourney Basic at $10 and Ideogram Plus at $20. For free daily credits, Krea publishes the clearest allowance at 100 units a day.
This guide covers three questions: which AI image generators work without a subscription, which give free daily credits, and what you get for under $20 a month. It compares eleven options in one table, then explains which one fits which job.
Disclosure: Morphed makes this blog and one of the tools listed. We rank by fit for the job, not by who wrote the page.
Method: We read each tool's own pricing page or documentation on November 4, 2026. Some pricing pages blocked our checker or showed local currency, so where we could not confirm a number at the source, the cell says "See site". We did not run image tests for this page, so it says nothing about output quality. Prices change often; check before you buy.

Which AI image generators can you pay as you go?
fal, Replicate and the OpenAI API are true pay-as-you-go: you add credit and pay per image, with no plan at all. They are also the cheapest per image. Replicate lists FLUX Schnell at $0.003 an image, and OpenAI lists GPT Image 1 Mini at $0.005 an image at low quality.
The catch is that these are developer platforms. You call them through an API or a basic playground, so there is no editor, history or template library, and each model's license sets what you can do with the output.
If you want an app instead of an API, two options sell one-time packs:
- Morphed credit packs. 300 credits for $6, 1,000 for $15, 2,500 for $35 or 5,000 for $69. A pack works without a subscription and unlocks the same models as the Basic plan.
- Krea compute packs. One-time packs from 2,000 to 50,000 units, valid for 90 days. Krea's page does not say whether free accounts can buy them.
Ideogram also lists pay-as-you-go top-up credits on the Credits tab "where available", without a public price per credit.
Which AI image generator has the most free daily credits?
Krea has the clearest free daily allowance we could verify: 100 compute units a day, refilled daily. Ideogram's free plan is weekly, not daily: 30 credits a week, only for accounts that sign in with Google, Apple or Microsoft, and every free image is public.
ChatGPT's free plan includes image generation, but OpenAI does not publish a fixed number. For Leonardo and Adobe Firefly we could not confirm current free allowances on their own pages, so check there.
Two tools here have no free generations at all: Midjourney, which has no free trial, and Morphed. If free volume matters most, read our guide to free AI image generators.
What is the best AI image generator under $20 a month?
The best plan under $20 depends on whether you want one model or many. Each tool counts in its own unit (credits, units, GPU hours), so there is no honest single "images per dollar" ranking across them.
- Midjourney Basic ($10/month) if you want Midjourney's look. It has no free trial, and there are no other models on the plan.
- Krea Basic ($9/month) for 5,000 compute units a month, plus a daily free allowance before you pay.
- Ideogram Plus ($20/month) for 2,400 credits and private images. It is right at the $20 line. Basic is no longer sold to new users.
- Morphed Basic ($9/month) for 650 credits that work across many image and video models from one balance.
What does $9 get you on Morphed?
Morphed Basic is 650 credits a month, and each model has a fixed credit cost, so the number of images depends on the model you pick. Here is what one month of Basic, or one $6 pack of 300 credits, makes at each model's default setting:
| Model | Credits per image | Images per $9 Basic month (650 credits) | Images per $6 pack (300 credits) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Z-Image Turbo | 1 | 650 | 300 |
| FLUX 3 Klein (1K) | 1.5 | 433 | 200 |
| Nano Banana 2 Lite | 6 | 108 | 50 |
| FLUX 3 (1K) | 8 | 81 | 37 |
| Ideogram 4.5 (Medium) | 9 | 72 | 33 |
| Nano Banana 2.1 (1K) | 11.5 | 56 | 26 |
| GPT Image 2.5 (Medium) | 12 | 54 | 25 |
New subscribers get 30% off their first 3 months on monthly web checkout, which brings Basic to $6.30 a month for those months. See every model's cost on the models page and every plan on pricing.
Pros and cons of each option
Every tool here has a real downside, including ours.
- fal and Replicate. Pro: cheapest per image, no plan. Con: developer tools, and licenses vary by model.
- OpenAI API. Pro: pay per image, with GPT Image 1 Mini from $0.005. Con: an API, not an app, and higher quality settings cost much more per image.
- ChatGPT app. Pro: free image generation inside a chat you may already use. Con: OpenAI does not publish the free cap.
- Morphed. Pro: one balance across many image and video models, plans from $9 and packs from $6 with no subscription. Con: no free renders at all, packs expire after 3 or 6 months, and monthly plan credits don't roll over.
- Krea. Pro: 100 free units a day and a $9 plan. Con: compute packs last 90 days, and its page doesn't say whether free accounts can buy them.
- Ideogram. Pro: a weekly free allowance. Con: free images are public, the free allowance needs a Google, Apple or Microsoft sign-in, and the cheapest plan for new users is $20.
- Midjourney. Pro: a $10 entry plan. Con: no free trial, and extra Fast GPU time is only sold on top of a plan.
- Magnific (formerly Freepik). Pro: a commercial AI license on Premium. Con: no free plan listed on its pricing page.
Which should you pick?
- You generate a few images a month and hate subscriptions: a one-time pack (Morphed from $6, or Krea) or pay-per-image on fal or Replicate if you are comfortable with an API.
- You want the most free images before paying: Krea's daily units, then Ideogram's weekly credits.
- You want one model's style: Midjourney Basic at $10.
- You want many image and video models under $20: Morphed Basic at $9 or Krea Basic at $9.
